Everything You Need to Know About the Upcoming National Heat Pump Rebate

2 min read

The Government of Canada recently announced a major $2 billion initiative: the One Million Home Energy Retrofits campaign. Designed to help homeowners cut energy costs, reduce emissions, and increase year-round indoor comfort, this program makes upgrading to high-efficiency heating and cooling equipment more accessible than ever.

At the centerpiece of this campaign is the new National Heat Pump Rebate, offering substantial financial support for Canadian families looking to modernize their home comfort systems.

How Much Funding Can You Receive and Who Is Eligible?

The rebate program is structured into two main tiers based on household income and property type:

  • Up to $10,000 Tier: Available for households whose total annual income falls below the median income threshold for their region and family size.

  • $2,000 Tier: Available for all other eligible homeowners, regardless of income level.

To qualify as an eligible household, the property must be a Canadian residential home (such as a single-family home, townhome, or row house) owned and occupied by the applicant. Additionally, the upgrade must feature a qualified cold-climate air-source heat pump installed by a certified professional.

Beyond the dollar amounts, the government has streamlined the entire process. Unlike previous initiatives (such as the Canada Greener Homes Grant), no pre- or post-installation energy audits are required. This eliminates extra upfront audit costs and long waiting periods. Furthermore, applications will feature fast digital approvals, with direct deposit payments issued within days of submitting final installation receipts.

Additionally, these federal funds can be combined with local financing options, such as Calgary’s Clean Energy Improvement Program (CEIP), making high-efficiency home upgrades even more manageable.

When Does the Program Launch?

The application portal is slated to officially open in early 2027. The government is currently finalizing eligibility guidelines and working closely with HVAC manufacturers and trade professionals to ensure equipment supply and installer readiness.

While the portal isn't open for applications just yet, homeowners can sign up directly on the federal website to receive instant notifications when launch dates and official criteria are released.

Why Choose a Cold-Climate Heat Pump?

Modern electric heat pumps do far more than traditional systems.

  • All-in-One Comfort: They provide high-efficiency heating during freezing winter months and whisper-quiet central air conditioning throughout summer heatwaves.

  • Lower Monthly Utility Bills: Inverter-driven compressors dynamically adjust output, consuming significantly less electricity than older heating systems.

  • Cold-Weather Reliability: Premium cold-climate units are specifically engineered to deliver reliable heat even during harsh Canadian winter drops.
